IGCSE Marine science. Activity 2.3- Upwelling

In the book on page 118, we find Activity 2.3

In this exercise you will make a model of upwelling.

You will need:

A large clear container (plastic or glass)

An electric fan or a hairdryer or a similar device that can create an airflow

Water

Food colour

Method:

Fill the tank with water

Plate the air source so it blows air across the surface

Be careful with electricity and water

Add some food colour to the water close to the bottom

Turn on the airflow

Observe how the colour moves, and explain why.

Here is my setup:

What happens?

The airflow at the surface push the water and creates a sureface current. This pushes water away from the coast

This draws up the water from the bottom, filled with the nutrients.

This is what we see in the video. In reality we don't see the nutrients, but we can see the algae growth comming from increasted amount of nutrients.
