6.9 Conservation Strategies

The last chapter in the syllabus looks at:

Candidates should be able to:

1 describe species richness as the number of different species that live in an area

2 describe and evaluate strategies for conserving species richness

(a) sustainable harvesting of wild macroalgae, plant and animal species

(b) aquaculture of commercial species and endangered species

(c) national marine parks and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)

3 describe and evaluate conservation projects

(a) coral farming for introduction to artificial or damaged reefs

(b) protecting turtle nest sites and rearing turtles for release

 (c) culling invasive species such as lionfish

My notes for the chapter are here:

Note that I mess up Species richness and Biodiversity a bit

Species richness is the simple count of different species within a specific area, acting as a basic metric for biodiversity.

Biodiversity is a broader term encompassing species richness, genetic variability within species, and ecosystem diversity.

Species richness only tells us how many, whereas biodiversity tells us how varied life is

Thios is from the AS level Marine, but might have interest for those who "want to go deeper" (dad joke)
