This small experiment shows how we can see how the volume of water depends on the temperature
Its important to be careful when we heat up water, and its extra important to make sure that the system is open so pressure can excape the system (in this case trough the glass tube)
Otherwise the glass can shatter
You need:
A glass beaker
A rubber plug with 2 holes
A thermometer
A glass tube
A heat source
Food dye
Set up the experiment as in the video
Slowly heat up the water and see how the temperature changes (increases)
Meassure how the water rises in the glass tube
Be careful to stop before there is ANY boiling! if there is boiling there is a risk of injury from hot water and broken glass.
Try to explain why water expands when heated, and how this can have an effect in the ocean
