The syllabus contains.
Candidates should be able to:
Use and explain the terms element, compound and mixture
Describe neutrality, acidity and alkalinity in terms of pH
Investigate the pH of sea water, fresh water (PA) and rain water, using universal indicator
Investigate the effect on pH of adding carbon (PA) dioxide to sea water
Describe the composition of sea water, using the terms solvent, solute, solution, dissolve, soluble, insoluble and salts, with reference to sodium chloride, magnesium sulfate and calcium carbonat
investigate the effect of temperature on the (PA) solubility of a solute in water
describe salinity as the concentration of dissolved salts, using units of parts per thousand (ppt)
Compare and explain the salinities of some of the world’s oceans and seas
Explain how environmental factors affect salinity
State that estuaries are partly enclosed bodies of water where a river flows into the sea
Fescribe estuaries as tidal bodies of water, where fresh water mixes with sea water, resulting in changes in salinity during the tidal cycle
Explain that the gases oxygen and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere dissolve in water, and that oxygen has a low solubility in water
Compare the relative concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and dissolved in sea water
Describe and explain how an increase in temperature reduces the solubility of oxygen and carbon dioxide in water
Investigate the effect of temperature on gas solubility
